Barbara grew up relying on her father (the “R” of H&R Block), then her husband, to manage her inheritance. But early in Barbara’s marriage, she found out her husband was a compulsive gambler. And here’s the insane part — she continued to let him handle all their finances because that’s how scared and intimidated she was by money.

That didn’t change until a devastating financial crisis became a personal wake-up call. Barbara received tax bills for over $1m for illegal deals her ex got them in. He’d left the country. She didn’t have anywhere close to $1m. And her father wouldn’t lend her the money. Barbara had three daughters — one just a baby, and she was not going to raise them on the street. That’s when Barbara knew she had to get smart. And she did.

Barbara shares her journey to financial independence in hopes of inspiring, and even better, motivating YOU to become smart (or smarter) with money… and earn more than you’re making now. It’s much simpler and more in your control than you may realize.

She discovered a surprising series of insights that all these women shared — insights that enabled them (and eventually, her) to get smart about money. Those insights became the core of her first book, Prince Charming Isn’t Coming: How Women Get Smart About Money (Penguin).

Suddenly, Barbara was a financial expert, with a whole new career, traveling the country educating women about money. But she couldn’t make money, at least not very much, no matter how hard she worked. That’s when her mentor, Karen McCall, told her, she was an underearner.

“I am not!” Barbara protested. “I’m a writer. Everyone knows writers don’t make money!!!”

Barbara truly believed that until she decided to focus her research on women’s earnings. Rather than concentrate on the wage gap and gender barriers, she turned her attention to the women who were breaking those barriers.

Olympia Scott is the first woman in history to win a WNBA Championships with 2 different teams, doing so in 2005 with the Sacramento Monarchs and in 2007 with the Phoenix Mercury. Ms. Scott was instrumental in forming the Women’s National Basketball Players’ Association and served on its Executive and Negotiating Committees and as the Secretary-Treasurer for multiple terms. Prior to playing 10 seasons in the WNBA and 11 seasons in 6 different European countries, she was a 4-year starter for the Stanford University Women’s Basketball Team where she earned a BA in Sociology, was named Team Captain, All Pac-10, All-American, a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Award and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. Ms. Scott also won gold and bronze medals for the US National Team and in 2013 she was inducted into the Stanford University Athletic Hall of Fame.

After playing professional basketball for over a decade, Ms. Scott became an entrepreneur/speaker/author on a mission, starting with co-founding Super Parenting, LLC a parenting education company, and co-authoring the book, Super Parenting: Raising the Next Generation. Ms. Scott served as a sports ambassador for the US State Department and represented the WNBA & NBA traveling internationally providing basketball clinics, motivational speaking, and Super Parenting seminars. Additionally, Ms. Scott was recruited into the human resources industry as an Executive Recruiter, partnering with Top ENR general contractors, real estate developers and construction management firms providing talent acquisition strategy and services.

Currently, Ms. Scott is an entrepreneur living in Los Angeles, CA, the President & CEO of Super Parenting, LLC and of Marshall & Marshall Design, LLC, an architecture and design consultancy focused on building design and intellectual property. In addition, Ms. Scott is a motivational and keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, and Certified Master Life Coach serving universities, Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, municipalities, students and professionals in the areas of career coaching, executive coaching, leadership coaching, purpose discovery and transformation with her company, Changing the Game Coaching.

Although her basketball career is over, Ms. Scott’s true legacy has just begun, as she is a charismatic leader and change agent with an inspiring energy that she uses as a means to connect people to positive messages of hope and responsibility as she endeavors to change the world, one person at a time!

Silke Endress International, Editor-In-Chief Remembers Dikembe Mutombo

God has called home another faithful servant. Losing Dikembe Mutombo is a heartbreaking loss, not just for the basketball community, but for the world at large.

He was so much more than an NBA Hall of Famer, he was a true humanitarian, a voice for the voiceless, especially marginalized women and children. Working with him on women’s rights projects with Silke Endress International, the UN, and CARE was an honor. We didn’t just attend conferences like the Bloomberg Global Business Summit, CARE or McCain Institute, a common interest; we shared stories, exchanged ideas, and best practices for sustained growth. In 2010, I remember Dikembe asking me to stand on a chair to take a photo so I can be his equal in height and passion.

When Dikembe spoke on panels discussions, I listened carefully and was always in awe of his unwavering commitment to human rights. His passion was just as towering as his presence on the court.

Dikembe always stood tall, not just in height, but in his moral convictions. Just as he was a defensive powerhouse in basketball, blocking shots with ease, he defended those who didn’t have access to health services, education, or economic opportunities, particularly in his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was relentless, whether it was on the court or fighting for justice. He embodied what it means to be a champion, both in sports and in life.

Dikembe will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, advocacy, and resilience will continue to inspire. Rest in peace, Dikembe. The world was better with you in it.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Dikembe Mutombo

Hillary and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Dikembe Mutombo, a legendary basketball player, devoted humanitarian, and profoundly good man. I’ll never forget hosting his large family at the White House. They filled the whole stairway down to the South Lawn.

As commanding as he was on the court, he was even better off it, with a big heart to match his 7-foot-2-inch frame, a great sense of humor, and an unshakeable commitment to helping people everywhere, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. His proudest achievement was the state-of-the-art hospital he built in Kinshasa in honor of his mother, which Hillary loved visiting in 2009.

Dikembe was also an active member of the Clinton Global Initiative community from the very beginning, making and keeping commitments to support the hospital and more economic opportunity across Africa. He was the real deal and inspired everyone at CGI to follow his lead. He once told me that he blocked shots for a living, but he lived to save lives and open doors.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Rose, his children, and everyone else who loved him, was inspired by him, and is living a better life today because of him.
